I am quite pleased with the amount of work I got done in self study last week. As I made a real progression on the work needed for seminar groups and feel if this week’s self study is as productive as last weeks, I should be well on the way to having the work completed for fake submission next week.
Monday morning, there was a real unhappy atmosphere in the room and I don’t think it’s been so quite in that room since we started. After lunch the atmosphere was much more lively and peoples spirits had been lifted again, after there feedback on the A2 referral.
I spent all day Monday finishing off writing the web content and for some reason I feel that I should have and could have done much more work. Even after a full day on the content I still need to recheck all the terms and there are some that need expanding.
Tuesday was another surreal experience, even though it was basically the same method as with the business cards, I feel as though it is a new experience to me. This is probably because of the changing pace in which we had to work. When we first started I couldn’t get into the swing of thing and felt rushed, but after the first banner design I got into it. It made it more interesting when Steve kept lowering the time limit and before this experience, if someone had asked me to create four designs in a minute I would have thought it was impossible. I really enjoyed the activity and think I will try it in the future, even though it wouldn’t work if I did it by myself.
I really enjoyed creating the banners in Photoshop and even though they are not finished yet I feel that I got quite a lot of work done on them.
Below are my two banners and even though they are not finished yet, I would appreciate it, if you could give me some feedback on them and let me know what I can do to improve them. The main part I’m not sure of, is the word ‘Jazz’ been on the hat of Don Weller. Thanks in advance.

A couple of comments on your banners…
At times the text seems a bit squashed, e.g. on the Don Weller one, between the edge and the saxaphone- perhaps making the font smaller could helps this. I’m also not sure about the typeface used- it’s a bit ’standard’.
On the Tina May one, I’m not sure whether the off-alignment with ‘Wakefield’ and ‘Jazz’ should be there. As Steve said, use the P.A.R.C. rules before you break them!
Other than that, I quite like them!
Thanks Tom, I have to agree with you on both comments and I’ll make those amendments to them.
I really like your designs Greg, your Tina May one jumped out at me first but after closer inspection it’s probably due to the fact it’s similar to mine
I just uploaded it now so I know plagiarism has been involved…
As for the Don Weller image yes I don’t think the text laying over his hat works, it looks accidental and wrong. My Don Weller image can be found here if you want a look.
I really do like both of your designs, but I’m not sure what you’re on about with the plagiarism comment. To be honest I’m quite offended by it!
Apologies Gregg, it was only a joke because they are quite similar. I wasn’t accusing you of anything.
Yea sorry Craig I did take it in the wrong way, I wasn’t sure if it was a joke or not. I just wrote that before I thought.
I am glad you liked the banner task we did, as I really enjoyed it to.
I really like your banner designs but as you said you wasnt sure about the word ‘Jazz’ I was the same but I think if you try and make the word stand out then I think that will make it look good.
It might be easier just moving Mr Weller down a little bit to get his hat away from ‘Jazz’.
You could drop just Jazz down underneath the rest of your text.
The design challenges just get better and better wait until you get the Culture Vulture assignment (may be called something different so A9). This assignment so far has been the hardest for me but now my favourite now we know our product.
Hi Greg
Reaffirming the things I said during class, the font on the Tina May design I personally find it a little hard to read.
I like the fact that you have retained the colour for her photograph as it works very well.
Does the image compress down below the golden 20k mark?
The Don Weller banner works well other than the text in the top left, due to the lack of contrast it doesn’t really stand off the page as well as it could.
I do really like how Don is looking at the “live at…” text.
It directs the viewers eyes well.
With regards Craig’s comment, I think that because we have all been given the same brief, the same images, the same tutor and the same time scales in which to produce the banners I feel that it is inevitable that some design ideas will overlap.
Well done.
Nice effort on these Greg, I really like the verticle position of the text on the first one, it’s right next to the face which is the thing that draws your eye the most, which then leads you onto the text. So immediately you know who the person is.
Above that the text could be improved, I don’t know what it is I can’t put my finger on it, maybe try changing the text a little bit fontwise and see how it works out then.
On the Don Weller I’m not sure if that particular font works along with the picture and the theme of ‘jazz’, personally I think it lends it’s self to computers and a more futuristic feel. Lets try get some horizontal names in there too lol.
Good overall effort, really impressed.
Im not sure the Tina May banner works for me, perhaps the position of the text. Also im not sure about the style of the font as I beleive its an 8. But it looks sort of like a S or 5….
Comment deadline.
Both the banners are under the 20k limit and I know what you mean about the font on Don Weller, I’ve not found a suitable font yet, any suggestions?
Thanks for all the useful comments everyone, I will make some amendments and post them up soon.
